Ami Pro Converter vs. Free Online .SAM Converters

Ami Pro files are unusually stubborn: Word has never had a .SAM import filter and LibreOffice has none either. Here is how Ami Pro Converter compares to the alternatives people actually try — free cloud converters, LibreOffice, and a legacy virtual machine.

TL;DR

A free online converter is fine for one non-sensitive document you just want to peek at. For anything involving contracts, case files, personnel records, an archive of more than a handful of documents, or documents containing diagrams and equations, Ami Pro Converter is the professional choice — a native .SAM parser, automatic .STY style sheets, batch conversion, and 100% local processing for $49.95 one-time.

What about LibreOffice?

LibreOffice is the standard answer for legacy formats, and it genuinely solves the WordPerfect problem. It does not solve this one. LibreOffice ships import filters for WordPerfect, ClarisWorks, MacWrite, early Word, and a long list of other obsolete applications, but it has never had an Ami Pro .SAM filter. The file either fails to open or imports as raw bracketed markup. Verifying that takes two minutes and saves an afternoon of searching for the right menu option.

What about a legacy virtual machine?

Running Ami Pro 3.x inside a Windows 98 VM works — the original application opens its own files perfectly. The costs are the problem: sourcing legacy media and licences, maintaining an unpatched guest OS your security team will object to, no batch capability, and file-transfer friction on every document. It is a reasonable answer for five documents and an unworkable one for five thousand.

When Free Converters Make Sense

Free online converters are fine for opening a single, non-sensitive .sam file in a pinch — a personal letter you wrote in 1995 and just want to read again. If you do not care about style fidelity, embedded diagrams, or who else sees the file, a free tool can do the job.

When You Need Ami Pro Converter

  • You have more than a handful of files — any archive of 10+ documents means batch processing saves hours
  • The documents are contracts, case files, HR records, or patient correspondence — anything covered by privilege, GDPR, HIPAA, or a confidentiality clause
  • The documents contain diagrams or equations — text-scraping converters drop them without warning
  • You need style fidelity — the .STY style sheet has to be applied or headings stop looking like headings
  • You are feeding an intranet, search index, or AI pipeline — you need clean HTML or Markdown, not a re-saved DOCX
  • You need a repeatable audit trail — logs and consistent naming for a defensible migration record

The Real Cost of "Free"

Free cloud converters cost you in ways that are not on the price tag: the disclosure risk of uploading privileged documents to unknown servers, the hours spent converting files one at a time, and the silent data loss when style sheets, tables, diagrams, and equations quietly fail to make the trip. For professionals, the $49.95 investment in Ami Pro Converter pays for itself with the first batch conversion.
